Traverse City’s New Outdoor Theater Offers Hair-Raising Experience

Places Everyone: It's opening night for Parallel 45!

It’s opening night for summer theater in Traverse City, at the outdoor amphitheater at the Grand Traverse Civic Center.

Erin Anderson Whiting with Parallel 45 Theatre says, “We are thrilled, this is really a two-years-in-the- making endeavor.”

Thursday is the first night for shows at the new home of Parallel 45. The theatre company brought in sound designers and engineers to make improvements to the amphitheater, plus the addition of the shell over the concrete stage.

Dozens of cast and crew members are working to put on three shows this summer season, starting with the Rock musical, “Hair”.

Whiting says, “This is really the result of a partnership with Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation and hundreds of generous donors. That is what you see behind me. And it’s been a true labor of love to bring this amphitheater, that’s gotten very little use the past couple of years, back to life.”

Whiting says everyone is excited for opening night. “To finally have an audience here tonight, our artists have been working so hard. We have a group of over 50 actors, directors, designers, and musicians in Traverse City to perform for our community.”

Parallel 45 will have 27 performances this season, which runs through August 4th. Parallel 45 is also putting on the kid-friendly show “Little Bunny Foo Foo” with matinees starting next week. And the play “Stupid Bird” opens on July 25th.
