Crews Recover and Identify Man’s Body in Mecosta County’s Round Lake

In Mecosta County, crews responded to a drowning this weekend on Round Lake.

Monday morning, they identified the victim.

The sheriff’s office says the dive team recovered the body of 68-year-old of Richard Jones of Belding.

Jones was boating with family when he jumped into the water Saturday evening.

They say he was an experienced swimmer and believe there was some kind of event leading up to his drowning.

“We use what are called sonar units which are able to mark distinct objects underneath the water at any depth and by doing that we’re able to pinpoint by GPS and be able to dive on those targets we call them. Our number one goal is to bring closure to the family,” said Mecosta County Sheriff Todd Purcell.

The Sheriff says blood tests will be done and the medical examiner’s office will decide if there will be an autopsy.
