Traverse City Redevelopment Delayed by High Groundwater Levels

Crews working on Eighth Street in Traverse City say a surprising discovery has set back construction by a few weeks.

The ground water level is so high this year, workers needed to use different materials to install new water main gaskets at Wellington and Eighth Streets.

Water levels in the Great Lakes set records after this year’s snowy winter and rainy spring.

Crews measured the groundwater last year during normal levels and did not anticipate this year’s high marks.

At the Traverse City commission meeting on Monday, a representative said they may be able to get back on track with their October deadline if the nice weather continues.
