Kids Takeover Downtown at National Cherry Festival Junior Royale Parade

Thousands of people lined the streets in downtown Traverse City Thursday to make way for the little kings and queens of the National Cherry Festival Junior Royale parade.

It’s one of the biggest parades just for children in the state!

All of the local elementary schools participate and are tasked with making grand floats and choosing their own cherry queens and kings to ride in them.

This year’s theme was a fun one – board games!

Schools, community groups and bands were all on deck

The tradition is one the whole town rallies around every year.

“My wife and I have traveled all over the world and watched parades being made and done, and this is by far the best,” said Herb Lemcool, the parade’s live commentator and announcer. “All the marching units, the bicycles, the pets, you know it’s just a great tradition in Traverse City.”

The DTE Foundation Cherry Royale Parade is Saturday.
