Experiencing Northern Michigan: Tradition Tastes Sweet at The Cherry Hut in Beulah

Picture this: just a good old-fashioned slice of cherry pie a la mode. Ah yes, at last, summertime in Northern Michigan is finally here! With the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City now getting underway, why not kick off the season by honoring our community’s love of cherries with a trip to The Cherry Hut

Near the shore of Crystal Lake in Benzie County, within the little village of Beulah, population 324 according to the 2010 census, The Cherry Hut opened last month, on May 11, for their 97th season. Beulah itself was founded in 1880, so the village was a very young 42 years old when The Cherry Hut first began the business. The history and upheld traditions of this charming, seasonal, hometown restaurant is partly what makes it a Northern Michigan icon. The Cherry Hut has succeeded in sustaining itself for nearly a century now through preserving (no pun intended) a unique sense of tradition.

A hometown favorite and “Northern Michigan tradition since 1922,” The Cherry Hut is famous for their cherry pie (a la mode, of course, with rich French vanilla ice cream dolloped on top) and for their vast variety of cherry treats, from jams, jellies, and preserves to salsas and Cherry Gerry’s Chewy Sour Cherries! They also sell super cute cherry-themed gifts, including cherry-patterned pencils and adorable aprons, in addition to lots of other fun, eclectic souvenirs inspired by the almighty cherry.

I got to be part of the making of a TV commercial produced by Mane Content for The Cherry Hut last summer, and it was such a fun time! Not only is this restaurant’s food incredible, but what makes it truly special are the people who work at The Cherry Hut. From the pie-makers to the waitresses to the owners, everyone was beyond wonderful to work with and made our job so easy! Before heading home after the shoot, I couldn’t resist buying cherry sours, a jar of cherry preserves, and the cherry-patterned apron.

Open daily from 11am to 8pm all summer long, The Cherry Hut is the perfect place Up North to enjoy a nostalgic lunch, hearty dinner, or cherry anything! Plus, exclusively on Sundays starting at 8am, The Cherry Hut hosts Beulah’s Bountiful Breakfast Buffet. I’ll have to come back again soon! As The Cherry Hut said recently on their Facebook page, now that summer’s officially here, “the only thing missing at The Cherry Hut is you!”

Enjoy this year’s Cherry Fest if you’re heading to Traverse City soon! Northern Michigan’s News Leader will be downtown at the Cherry Royale Parade on Saturday, June 6, so be sure to wave hi!
