9th Annual Road to Recovery Burger Bash Raises $6,000

Grilled burgers, some music and great company Wednesday night in Sault Ste. Marie.

Hundreds showed up at the Ninth Annual Road to Recovery Burger Bash at Central Savings Bank, where they raised $6,000 for a great cause.

Road to Recovery is part of War Memorial Hospital’s volunteer-driven program to drive patients, free of charge from the Eastern UP to cancer treatments at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

As of now, there are about two dozen drivers.

“It’s tremendous. You know, when you are going through the treatment like that and you don’t want to be dealing with it when you are sick, you don’t want to be dealing with traffic, and it’s just a great benefit,” said volunteer driver Mike Murray.

Murray used the service himself as a patient a couple years ago when he had a brain tumor.

Now, he is healthy enough to drive others who need help.
