Introducing: The Pulse

If anyone would have told me a year ago that I would be moving to Traverse City to write non-news stories about the unique people, community and places of Grand Traverse I would have laughed and said, ‘yeah sure,’ yet here I am.

Northern Michigan has been alluring to me for as long as I can remember. My paternal grandfather grew up in Ironwood, and my father has always had an infatuation with Lake Superior. I sleep next to a nightstand from a cottage my great grandmother owned in Clare, and my parents own a small home in Mancelona. Although I grew up in Dearborn I have always enjoyed the friendly nature of Northern Michigan people, the beautiful countryside, the black night skies dusted with the brightest stars and the beaches.

The Pulse is a digital column that will be dedicated to the stories that aren’t your typical news stories. The Pulse will be focused on quaint and unique stories about the people, community, and places of Grand Traverse. Grand Traverse is full of hidden gem stories and I am here to uncover and share them with the Northern Michigan community.

I have always enjoyed writing, especially stories about people and community. This newly created column is a dream job for me, and I can’t wait to get started on stories that are quirky, sweet and representative of all the wonderful things that Grand Traverse has to offer.

Many of us live our lives quietly and do extraordinary things quietly. I want to shine a light on the people of Grand Traverse who are doing inspiring things, to show the places in Grand Traverse that might get overlooked, and to give a platform to a community that is both complex and tight-knit.

I hope that you will join me on this new project by reading, sharing and contributing to The Pulse. I am interested in hearing all sorts of story ideas and I encourage all Northern Michigan residents who have something they want attention drawn to, to seek me out. I’m not hard to find. Together we can make The Pulse something that is fun, collaborative, and heartfelt.
