Gov. Whitmer Asks for $175M Increase for Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has asked Congress to pour another $175 million a year into the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Whitmer called for lawmakers to reauthorize the initiative at that rate for the next five years.

That’s up from the $300 million budget it saw from 2011 through this year.

It follows a back and forth with the Trump administration, which initially proposed a 90 percent cut in funding.

The wide-ranging effort is geared to protect the Great Lakes.
