Presidential Election 2020: Biden Controversy
Former vice president and now presidential candidate Joe Biden is stirring up controversy within his own party after a comment he made about segregationists in congress.
It happened during a fundraising event on Tuesday.
The Democrat was trying to make a point about civility in Washington.
He brought up working in the 1970s with former Mississippi Sen. James Eastland and former Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge. Both were avid segregationists and opponents of civil rights.
He used those lawmakers as examples of how “We got things done.”
Although Biden made clear he didn’t agree with the pair’s racist views, he’s now getting backlash from fellow Democrats.
Including primary campaign opponent Corey Booker, who is calling on Biden to apologize.
