The Grand Traverse Bay YMCA in Traverse City celebrated Public Safety Day for their 190 campers. First responding agencies from across Grand Traverse County came out to the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA south location, Thursday to meet with the campers.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office was on site with their dive team, an air boat and a drone. Traverse City Police Department staff were also there with their K-9 as well as Grand Traverse Metro Fire, Northflight with Munson Medical Center, the Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police and Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.
It was a chance for kids to meet one on one with the first responders to see what goes on behind the scenes and to understand the role the agencies play within their communities.
Thomas Graber, the senior program director with the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA says it’s the first year they’ve done the event, but they’re hoping it gives the kids a positive way to see what first responders do when it comes to safety.
