First West Nile Virus Activity of the Year Detected in Michigan

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services say the first West Nile virus activity of the year has been found downstate.

The department says it was confirmed in mosquitoes collected in Saginaw and Oakland counties.

It was also found in a Canadian goose in Kalamazoo County.

There were 104 serious illnesses and nine deaths related to the West Nile virus last year.

Symptoms include a high fever, confusion, and muscle weakness.
