Crawford County Golf Outing Renamed to Honor Former Sheriff Kirk Wakefield

A Crawford County community is hitting the greens to raise money for children and honor a former sheriff who recently passed away.

A golf outing started more than 20 years ago is now dedicated to Sheriff Kirk Wakefield.

Proceeds from the event support kids in the D.A.R.E. program.

Sheriff Wakefield was a key player in the program, so organizers wanted to honor his memory by renaming the event as the “Sheriff Kirk A. Wakefield – D.A.R.E. Golf Outing.”

Almost 100 golfers came out to the Grayling Country Club for the event.

“He’d be here today, enjoying this day with us, and unfortunately he’s not, but we are going to pay a tribute to him today and have fun and think about all the good times that we had with Kirk Wakefield,” said retired Captain Randy Baerlocher.

The event usually raises hundreds of dollars that helps fund the D.A.R.E. program.
