43rd Annual Air Race Classic Makes Stop at Chippewa Co. International Airport

“There’s not a high percentage of female pilots, yet,” said head timer in Kinross, Terri Wolski.

But after this all female pilot air race, that percentage could soar.

The 43rd Annual Air Race Classic started Tuesday morning in Jackson Tennessee and ends Friday in Welland, Ontario.

Along the way there are several check points.

One is Chippewa County International Airport.

Planes from 47 teams flew 200 feet above the runway to get timed, then continued on to the Soo, Ontario Airport to get cleared by customs.

This particular all female piloted race is only a small part of 90 years of women’s air racing.

“Ladies like this really encourage others to try things and to experience just the fun of aviation,” said Wolski.

One team, Jessica Martin and Hannah Beard, is from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.

The top ten scoring teams win a cash prize.

First place takes home $6,000.
