A Behind-the-Scenes look at the 71st Annual Lilac Festival Parade with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours

The Lilac Festival on Mackinac Island brings in thousands of visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of lilacs in full bloom. This 10 day festival’s finale with a parade that showcases the charm and beauty of the island.

Joe Hersher with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours explains that a parade on an island requires a lot of planning and attention to detail. Instead of a parade of cars leading the parade there are horses and flat bed carriages bringing the floats down main street.

Joe explains that horses can easily “spook” and get nervous with loud crowds and noise. It is his job to make sure the horses are happy making their way through the parade.
