Michigan Lumber & Wood Fiber Inc. in Oscoda Co. Heavily Damaged in Fire

“It’s bad. A lot more damage than we thought there was.”

An Oscoda County lumber mill is destroyed after a fire tore through it.

The fire started Saturday afternoon at Michigan Lumber & Wood Fiber Incorporated in Comins.

The Oscoda County Sheriff’s Office tells us no one got hurt.

Although the owners they tell us the mill is destroyed, they absolutely plan to rebuild.

We talked to the business owners, but they did not want to go on camera.

Their family says the fire started around 1 p.m. Saturday and fire crews didn’t leave until about 10 Saturday night.

Right now the owners tell us they are reaching out to their insurance company.

Not everything on the property is destroyed, but the mill is.

“A lot worse than I thought. You know, the first look at it looks not so bad, but then you get out and start looking around and you can see a lot of damage,” says Larry Frick, who lives in Fairview.

Michigan Lumber & Wood Fire has been in business for about 12 years.

It has between 40 and 50 employees that are out of a job for the time being.

People in the community say they are shocked at the extent of the damage, but are hopeful the owners will rebuild.

“He’s a pretty ambitious guy. Oh I know Tim’s going to do it. He won’t hesitate. He’s probably already got people lined up to start rebuilding,” Frick said.

And he says the community will help however they can.

“Tim knows every Tom, Dick and Harry around here and they’re all friends with him, so there will be a lot of support for him,” he said.

The business owners say they are so grateful for the support they’ve received from the community. They posted on Facebook with the hashtag #downbutnotout.
