Au Gres Anglers Win Walleye Tournament in Sault Ste. Marie

Two anglers from Au Gres took top honors in the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Walleye National Team Championship.

The competition took place from May 30 to June 1st in Sault Ste. Marie.

Josh Gordon and Justin Champagne took home two Ranger fishing boats, each worth $70,000.

They also earned a $25,000 check and a couple of trophies.

The event began Thursday morning with more than 170 two person teams from all across the U.S. and even from Canada.

The three day event wrapped up Saturday afternoon with the top 25 teams vying for the top prize.

Eight Northern Michigan teams finished in the top 25.

“Even though we are here local, we still had to put our time in on the water for two weeks straight, checking everything. There is so much water here. I mean, you can go 100 miles in either direction if you want to catch a fish.” said Matt Gregg.

He and teammate Dane Stanaway finished in third.
