Michigan Department of Corrections Addresses Prison Guard Stress, Suicide

The Michigan Department of Corrections is hoping to reduce stress and prevent suicide among prison guards by hiring a mental health professional.

The new employee will serve as the department’s employee wellness program manager.

Director Heidi Washington says the move is in response to studies that show corrections officers have high risks of suicide, divorce and PTSD.

The corrections department says it wants to increase training to help manage stress and reduce the negative stigma associated with asking for help.
