Grand Traverse Co. Commissioners Reject Tribe Funding Plan
Grand Traverse County commissioners have rejected a plan to forward a group of funding requests to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
Twice a year, the tribe distributes 2% of its video gaming revenue to local governments and nonprofits.
At Wednesday’s county commission meeting, the board voted not to submit the grant requests.
That’s because some commissioners argue the process is flawed and isn’t being handled according to the tribe’s agreement with the state.
That agreement started in 1994.
It states tribal governments distribute the gaming revenue twice a year, instead of paying property taxes.
