Gov. Whitmer Calls for Emergency Rule to Prevent Future Anchor Strikes in Straits of Mackinac

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is taking action to try and prevent damage to the Great Lakes.

Wednesday, the governor directed the DNR to file an emergency rule to help prevent any future anchor strikes in the Straits of Mackinac.

The emergency rule requires large vessels to verify no anchors are dragging before passing through the Straits.

It addresses an issue that happened back in April of 2018.

That’s when a vessel was unaware it was dragging an anchor through the Straits and caused damage to an underwater pipeline, leaking oil into the Straits.
