Lawmakers Pass Bills Banning Late-Term Abortion Technique

Both the State House and Senate passed bills Tuesday, banning the use of a common technique in late-term abortions.

The near identical bill packages would ban “dilation and evacuation” abortions. a technique used during second trimester abortions.

“We need to continue to fight for the lives of those who are unborn,” says Senator Curt VanderWall of Ludington.

Tuesday the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives voted to ban the abortion technique, but not all abortions.

“This just does not allow this procedure where they actually terminate the baby by breaking it apart,” says VanderWall.

The bills passed in both the House and Senate right on party lines, Republicans ‘yes’ and Democrats ‘no.’

“They are unprotected right now and I personally believe that that is a living child,” says VanderWall, “That has the same rights as all humans in the state.”

That’s where the divide always lands, the rights of the unborn compared to the mother.

“It takes the onus away from medical professionals and families to make the decision,” says Senator Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak, “Hopefully we’ll just be able to get out there and talk to people about why this decision needs to stay with families and medical professionals.”

This is not the “Heart Beat Bills” we have seen pass elsewhere but Democrats still see this as a political pawn moving forward.

“You look at the track record around the country of these bills being passed to make political statements,” says McMorrow, “To rile up a base, to try to get people out for 2020. It puts women’s lives at risk.”

Once the two chambers come together, they will agree on a final version of the bill and then send it to the governor’s desk. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has already said she would veto. If she does that, the Right to Life of Michigan has said they will push to get the signatures and petition together to get it on the ballot and let the people of Michigan decide.
