Michigan State Police Trooper Sentenced For Involuntary Manslaughter

A former Michigan State Police trooper was sentenced Monday for involuntary manslaughter against a black Detroit teenager.

Mark Bessner will spend at least five years in prison.

He says he shot 15-year-old Damon Grimes with a taser in 2017, after seeing him reach for what he believed was a gun on his waistband.

That’s when Grimes crashed an ATV and died.

Bessner offered an emotional apology in court before being sentenced.

“I’m truly sorry and I want the Grimes family to know I’m sorry.  I think about it every day.  And if there were a time machine that I can go, that I could jump into and go back and change the outcome I would.  But I can’t,” said Bessner.

Bessner quit the state police after the taser shooting.
