Honoring a Trailblazer: Judge Damon J. Keith

Flags are being lowered and federal courts in parts of Michigan are off for the day in honor of Judge Damon J. Keith.

Keith was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and was known as a “legal trailblazer.”

He served for more than 50 years in the federal courts and heard cases up until his death on April 28 at age 96.

Governor Whitmer ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the state capitol and all buildings in the Lower Peninsula at half-staff.

A funeral service will be held for Keith today at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit
