Traverse City Church Hosts Cinco De Mayo Fundraiser to Help Send Student to London

“I just want to thank everybody who has made this happen and our church family and community coming to give us support.”

A Northern Michigan church enjoyed authentic Mexican food this Cinco de Mayo, all while helping support one of its members.

The Traverse Bay United Methodist Church welcomed their congregation to a delicious Mexican meal following Sunday’s service.

It’s all to support 17-year-old Malachi Koon.

Malachi has been battling heart issues for years.

His mother tells us the surgeries and medical bills have kept him from experiencing a lot, but he just got clearance to travel to London with his school’s band.

But first he needs to raise enough money to go.

“My son has had three open heart surgeries and when that happens everyone pulls together and helped for him to be able to make trips back and forth to DeVos,” Laura Koon said.

“It’s really sweet to have this fundraiser ’cause I got to miss out on a lot of stuff when I was younger, but now a lot of people want to help me get to this London trip,” Malachi Koon said.
