Students Compete in Rudyard at MITES Regional Championship

A state-wide competition wrapped up its regional showcase Saturday, focusing on cabinetry and furniture.

Rudyard High School was home to the Michigan Industrial Education and Technology Society, MITES, Regional Championship.

More than 150 high school students in Eastern Upper Peninsula created items that ranged from large cabinets, to tables to CAD designs.

Judges awarded the ribbons Saturday morning.

Back in 2017, people living in the district voted to increase funding for the Career and Technical Education program.

That, in turn, increased interest in the trade industry.

“The millage allows for free programming for our students and throughout the region which has been a drastic improvement for us. We continue to see expansion of the CTE at our school and across the Eastern U.P.,” said Chad Folkersma, the Rudyard High School/Middle School principal.

The top winners of Saturday’s competition will advance to the state finals next weekend at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.
