Kids Take Initiative, Clean Up Mission Point Lighthouse

It wasn’t your typical lighthouse field trip for students at Old Mission Peninsula School.

Friday, as part of Better World Day, more than 100 kindergarten through sixth-grade students spent a couple of hours cleaning up the beach and trails around the Mission Point Lighthouse.

The students have been learning about initiative in their classrooms, and today they put that into practice by taking care of their community.

Third grader Elodie Curtis says they aren’t just talking about taking initiative. They are doing it.

“We’re learning about initiative and we’re taking initiative to clean up the lighthouse,” she says.

Second Grade Teacher Brooke Munford says a big part of the effort is about character education.

“We’ve been talking a lot about not just what they are doing now as kids in school, but how they are going to better the world for the future,” she says.

Today’s lighthouse cleanup on Old Mission was just one of more than 100 happening across the country for Better World Day.
