The demand is high for jobs in the skilled trades.

Clint Steele, with the , says they are training apprentices now who “Earn while they learn.”

UA Local 85 trains people to work in various construction positions for plumbing, pipe fitting and HVACR systems.

And the 5-year apprenticeship includes pay and benefits while working full-time.

“One day every other week they go to school,” Steele says.

That’s what is unique about this true apprenticeship. They put people to work.

Steele says the people they want in their program should have a willingness to work and learn.

“It’s construction, so it’s nice to be upfront about that early because you are going to be working in the elements a lot of the times,” he says. “But its good pay, good benefits.”

As a union, UA Local 85 offers special things to members.

“There’s a lot of benefits that come along with it, healthcare and a pension,” he says. “Retirement starts pretty much day one when they come on board. It’s a benefit that’s carried on throughout their career.”

For some people, hearing they will be working outside is a plus. They get to ditch the desk.

“That’s why I chose it,” Steele says.

The application process is always open. UA Local 85 takes a new class every year.
