Mother of Fallen Soldier Holding Ludington Golf Scramble for Memorial Scholarship

For 10 years a Gold Star mother has been awarding scholarships to Ludington students through a program started in her son’s memory.

Now she’s looking for help for even more generosity.

Army specialist Joe Lancour is a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient.

He died in 2007 while serving in Afghanistan.

Lancour was a Ludington High School grad.

Joe’s mother started the Joe Lancour Memorial Scholarship in 2009.

She’s been able to award several students with $500-600.

Now she wants to bring that number up to $1,000.

To do that she’s hosting a golf scramble next month and is looking for more teams.

“It just gives back to the community and Joe believed that each kid should have an opportunity to go to college. He believed that he should be able to have your dreams and you should be able to accomplish those and this scholarship gives them that opportunity,” says mother Starla Ownens.

The scramble will be May 31 at Lincoln Hills and Hemlock golf clubs.
