Gov. Whitmer Open to Allowing Straits of Mackinac Oil Tunnel

The governor says she is open to building a tunnel for Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline, but says she will pursue any strategy to get the existing pipes out of the water as quickly as possible.

This is despite her order to state officials not to act on a tunnel plan developed by former Governor Rick Snyder.

Snyder and Enbridge had agreed to run a new pipeline through a tunnel.

Governor Whitmer stopped work on that deal last month after the state attorney general said the law that allowed it was unconstitutional.

Enbridge hopes to have a tunnel done by 2024.
