Gov. Whitmer Calls for Review of Michigan’s Jail System
Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for a review of Michigan’s jail system, saying the status quo isn’t working.
She signed an executive order to start a bipartisan study of jail and court data due to the jail population in the state nearly tripling in the last 35 years while crime is at a 50-year low.
Michigan Chief Justice Bridget McCormack and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist will lead the 21-member task force.
It will also target the state’s pre-trial incarceration system.
