One Killed in Mason County Shooting; Gunman in Custody

Two people were shot in Mason County Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office says one person had died.

The sheriff’s office says the shooting happened before 6 a.m. at a home along U.S. 31 between Koenig and Hoague Road in Grant Township.

Police from all over the area were quickly called to the scene, shutting down the road as investigators are still on scene.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, the sheriff said two adults were shot. One of them is dead and the other is in serious condition.

The sheriff says a gunman barricaded himself inside the home.

He says law enforcement had to act quickly not only for the shooting victims, but also there were two children in the house.

It took two hours for the alleged shooter to come out of the house.

He is now in custody.

The victims’ names have yet to be released.

It’s also not clear what the motive is. That’s something state police and the sheriff’s office are working together on to find.

“I can’t say that it was in a break-in. I do know that there was knowledge between all of the parties involved and each other. What their involvement was in that residence, we don’t know. This is still a very active investigation, as you probably saw there were detectives roaming through our halls conversing and trying to gather information, so this investigation will go on throughout the day for sure and probably the days to follow,” said Sheriff Kim Cole.

Sheriff Cole says there is no more threat to the area and the forensic team will be on the scene for the majority of the day.

The shooter has yet to be arraigned.
