Business in Focus: River House & Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center

Two organizations are coming together to celebrate National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

River House in Grayling serves victims and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

The Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center in Roscommon helps the smallest victims when they need it most.

And together they will be raising awareness during the month of April.

River House

Kim Scott with the River House says they are working on the clothesline project, and will be hanging t-shirts up at courthouses in Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda and  Roscommon Counties.

“For those of you who don’t know about the clothesline project, you go to courthouses, literally put a clothesline up, and you put t-shirts–something to do with sexual assault,” she says. “Just empowerment there.”

River House will also be at Kirtland Community College on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m., showing the movie “Breaking the Chains,” doing yoga, hosting a candle light vigil and ending with an open mic opportunity for victims and survivors to share their music, poems or stories.

And Saturday will end the week with a free women’s self defense class for ages 13 and up. Registration is required.

Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center

If you see a ton of pinwheels in Northern Michigan this month, that could be because of the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center in Roscommon.

They will be making “pinwheel gardens” to help raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

And Rebecca Yuncker says the organization is holding a SHINE For Survivors Walk on April 23 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the center.  Contact amber.mackenzie@nmcac4kids.org for more information or to RSVP.

The Northern Michigan CAC will also be showing the movie “Resilience: The Biology of Stress & Science of Hope” at Houghton Lake Community Schools on April 30 from 6 to 7 p.m.

“That is really a movie to show how a community can be resilient, work together, support each other,” Yuncker says.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, door prizes and snacks.

To register, contact Tara Allard at allardt@coorisd.net.
