Chippewa Hills Students Raise Money For Fellow Student Recovering From Severe Burns

Students at Chippewa Hills Schools came together to help a fellow student.

12-year-old Ryland Carson recently suffered burns on 90 percent of his body.

His family says he was using a torch to light a wood fire when it happened.

He’s been getting treatment at Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati.

The family started a , but his school wanted to do something to help also.

Normally students are not allowed to wear hats inside the school building, but those rules were relaxed Thursday to help a student many hope to see back in the hall very soon.

It’s been more than two weeks since students at Chippewa Hills Intermediate Schools got the news that their classmate, friend and teammate Ryland Carson had suffered burns on 90 percent of his body.

“I was at a wrestling meet actually down south and my mom sent me this, and I went, ‘how bad is it?’ She went, ‘90 percent of his body’ and me and my buddy, we started crying because we figured out how bad it was,” said Hunter Sellers.

The school wanted to do something to help raise money for his medical expenses. The answer? Wear a hat and bring a donation. That’s just what students, teachers and staff at the district did on Thursday.

“It’s really cool that I can help raise money towards Ryland to make sure that he’s like doing better and help him out a lot,” said  Garrett Redlin.

Each student bringing what they could, a dollar, five dollars, the occasional twenty, plus money from a bake sale in Weidman and the district has already raised more than $4,000.

“It just helps his family out a lot with paying for all his medical fees. It feels really nice just to know that he has a bunch of people that will support him,” said Seth Weaver.

“That’s kind of how Chippewa Hills community is. Whenever there is a need we always find a way to come together,” said teacher Pattie Durbin.
