Spring is on its way! The snow is finally melting and the sun is shinning. The first official day we can call it spring is Wednesday March 20, so what better way to start off the new season than by heading to Northern Michigan’s largest greenhouse

This greenhouse has been making a name for itself for decades. They take planting pretty seriously.

General Anager Crystal VanThomme says, “It’s almost like raising thousands and thousands of little children. You nurture them, you care for them, you make sure they’re warm and fed and watered.”

Raising this many “flower children” takes a careful eye and a green thumb. It’s no secret they have spring fever. “We are in production mode so that means that we are getting ready for May and June – when it’s time to take your plants outside and plant them,” says Crystal VanThomme.

The staff at Plant Masters admits when the season hits, they are pretty occupied. “We are here 7 days a week from this time of year ‪until 4th of July. We hardly talk to anybody, we don’t do a whole lot.”

Longtime employee Debbi Foote claims to have one of the best jobs in Northern Michigan. She LOVES plants. “They make me happy. I love to see things growing from this little thing to this big thing. It just amazes me all the time.”

“I think that everyone can have a green thumb with the right education. When you come into a place like this we’re not going to set you up for failure or not give you any care instructions – we’ll walk you through it all,” says Crystal VanThomme.

Stepping one foot inside this greenhouse and you can kiss the winter blues goodbye! “it makes you feel like… Springs coming! And I’m looking forward to it,” says Debbi Foote.
