Sault Ste. Marie Crews Work to Drain Water From Streets

The warm temperatures, the rain, and more than three feet of snow pack still on the ground in Sault Ste. Marie is causing water to pile up on roadways.

Instead of moving snow the past few days, city workers have been clearing drains with hot steam so flooding doesn’t become a widespread issue.

Draining the water not only makes roads safer for drivers, it also helps homeowners.

“Trying to get the water off the streets because it can get up over the curbs and start flowing into people’s yards and flooding them out,” said city worker Bruce Lipponen.

Despite the amount of snow that has fallen this winter, city workers say street flooding has not been as bad as some previous years; however, Thursday night’s rain may change that.
