Business in Focus: Golf, Tee Times at Treetops Resort
Improving your swing in the spring.
Treetops Resort in Gaylord has a lot in store for golfers this upcoming season.
Keep an eye out—Director of Golf and Ski Kevin McKinley says late April is the goal for opening day.
“Typically we target a Friday, the second to last Friday or the last Friday of April,” he says. “And we open the Jones Masterpiece first and then the courses at the north, which are the other four golf courses, sometime right after the first part of May.”
If people want to get in and start golfing, you can start scheduling tee times now at treetops.com.
But first, a blast from the past.
McKinley says Treetops’ owner in the mid-‘80s, Harry Melling, started building the golf courses. And he had a unique goal in mind.
“He wanted to build a golf course for every single day of the week, he wanted to build seven golf courses,” McKinley says.
They didn’t quite get to seven, but Treetops does have five gorgeous courses that draw golfers to the links in their own unique ways.
Robert Trent Jones Senior put a masterpiece at Treetops in the ‘80s and Tom Fazio built one for the resort in the ‘90s.
McKinley says both golf-design superstars left their own, unique mark on Treetops Resort.
“If you are going to go into golf you might as well go big, and in the 1980s Robert Trent Jones Senior was the best designer at the time, so he built the masterpiece course down here,” he says. “In the early ‘90s, the trend was to build more playable courses, more player friendly courses so again he kind of dove in and asked the people who’s the best right now, and at that time it was Tom Fazio.”
