Ferris State University is home to the flagship Professional Golf Management program and now a new facility on campus will help them take their learning to the next step and make the sport more year round for the community.

“It’s going to be good,” says Connor O’Leary, golf management student from Pinckney, “Hopefully our grades don’t drop too much.”

Ferris State has always been known for their golf management program and now the school has added the Ken Janke Sr. Golf Learning Center to their resources, allowing students a hands on, year round training facility and a home for golf fanatics to take their hobby indoors.

“We have a putting green you can utilize whenever and we also three hitting bays down there,” says O’Leary, “We can open up the garage and hit right out into the driving range. Wintertime, summertime, whenever you need to.”

More courses across the country are adding these types of simulators to their clubhouses for the winter months, not many college programs are preparing their students like Ferris.

“For the Ferris PGM program to have this a brand new facility, top of the line, I mean this is something unusual for PGM programs,” says O’Leary.

Most people tend to lose their game over the winter and are pretty rusty come spring but an indoor facility like this can keep you fresh and possibly improve your game. Students are able to take all the analytical numbers and tell you what you need to do to straighten your ball out and lower your score.

“We kind of just give them a rundown of what they’re doing and we can help them slowly understand,” says O’Leary, “Once they start understanding that, they can maneuver their swing and we can help them out and fix it.”

Paid for mainly by donations and sponsorships, the facility will also house the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, showing off the state’s best golf memorabilia with the state’s premiere program.

“It’s something we’re honored to have here,” says O’Leary, “We have it in progress right now but once it’s all put in it’s gonna look great.”
