Frost Laws to Go Into Effect This Week

Frost laws will go into effect this week for roads in many Northern Michigan counties this week.

The warming temperatures bring thawing, and lots of water on the roadways.

Frost laws or weight restrictions typically go into effect near the end of winter.

This puts restrictions on trucks and heavy equipment on the roadways.

Most trucks have to cut their weight by about half and also have to reduce their speed.

“Just to protect the road from damage when they’re most vulnerable. Think of the more water you have in it the sloppier it gets. As that thaws, that ice turns to water but it’s trapped there, it can’t quite drain off, the ground below it is still frozen,” explained Luke Houlton, Osceola County Road Commission manager.
