Traverse City Clerk Appointed to State Election Modernization Team

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson handpicked Traverse City’s clerk for the state’s new Election Modernization Team.

Benjamin Marentette is one of 25 people selected to help make Michigan’s elections more accessible and secure.

He’ll also be helping the state adjust to new voting laws.

Those changes include same day voter registration, straight ticket voting and absentee voting for all.

Now, voters will be able to request an absentee ballot without having any reason.

Marentette will work to make voting easier and cheating harder.

He wants to focus on getting more people to the polls and using technology to make it more efficient.

“I’m really excited for the fact that not only are we going to look at how to implement these changes to the constitution, we’re also just going to look at elections as a whole and what can be done to modernize things, ”said Marentette. “We need to make it easy for people to vote we need to make it a fun experience, a friendly one, not something that’s dodgy or intimidating.”

The Election Modernization Team will brainstorm voting improvements and hopefully implement them during the presidential election in 2020.
