Investigators Work to Identify Remains Found in Burned Down Mackinac County Home
Not much is left of a Mackinac County home after a fire tore through it early Wednesday morning.
Detectives are now working to identify the remains of one person found inside.
Police were called to the scene Wednesday morning after electric utility workers found the burned home.
Deputies believe the fire started overnight at the home on Maple Street in Moran Township about 12 miles west of St. Ignace.
The sheriff says the nearby homes are all seasonal and the closest neighbors were not in sight of the home.
By the time first-responders got to the scene, the house was nearly completely burned down.
Investigators are now waiting on DNA and dental tests to positively identify the victim.
“They’re doing some analysis on the remains to determine for sure, an identity. We have a pretty good idea of who was in the residence, it does not appear to be suspicious in anyway but we are continuing the investigation to make sure we know exactly what happened here,” Mackinac County Sheriff Scott Strait, said.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
