Traverse City Theatre Group Finds New Summer Home

A Traverse City theatre company will have a new home for the summer, and it is making big plans for a local park.

The Parallel 45 Theatre is partnering with Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation for a new summer theatre space.

The theatre will launch its summer season at the Grand Traverse Civic Center, and use the outdoor amphitheater at Civic Center Park.

It’s an area that’s tucked away from view, near a picnic area and the ball fields.

But Parallel 45 says it’s a perfect spot for summer theater.

Kit McKay, artistic director, says “We’re going to be doing three shows, a musical, a kids show entirely for kids ages 3 and above, and we’re going to be doing a show with a little more adult material, an adaptation of Chekov’s The Seagull. So we’re hoping to have a little bit for everybody.”

The summer musical will be the 60s rock-musical, “Hair.”

As part of the partnership with the county, Parallel 45 will bring in sound designers and engineers to make improvements and help with acoustics at the amphitheater.

Other events could also be held in the public space when not in use by the theatre company.
