Governor Whitmer Takes Action to Protect the Great Lakes

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is taking action to protect the great lakes, clean up Michigan’s drinking water and fight the impacts of climate change.

Governor Whitmer signed two executive orders and an executive directive on Monday.

Under the first order, the Michigan DEQ would be re-named the department of environment, great lakes and energy, or EGLE.

That order also creates new offices within the department focused on clean water and environmental justice.

The second order strengthens Michigan’s PFAS action response team. The directive places Michigan in the US Climate Alliance.

That’s a bipartisan coalition of governors from 19 other states, which have all committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
