Northern Michigan in Focus: Spinning Ice Circle

Sometimes just taking a walk you’ll notice some amazing things in nature.

As Corey Adkins shows us in this week’s Northern Michigan in Focus, one Gladwin man noticed something that gained them quite a bit of attention.

“We are in Gladwin at North Park on the Cedar River.  The trail that runs all the way to town into town,” said Greg Juneac.

This is the time of year where ice rules, forming beautiful creations on anything the water sticks to.

Last week Greg Juneac was minding his own business hiking along the Cedar River when he saw something amazing.

“I just thought it was really neat and I hadn’t seen it before,” said Greg.

His wife Mary added, “He showed it to me very nonchalant and I said, ‘Eek!’”

He saw a spinning circle of ice in the river.

“The spinning circles of ice were born,” said Mary.

It was at a part of the Cedar River that swirls like a huge whirlpool. Kids swim there in the summer but in the winter, when conditions set up perfectly, this happens, but it can disappear just as fast as it forms.

“The day before it was almost gone, and yesterday it was completely gone, and now it’s reforming again,” explained Greg.

While we we’re there it was mesmerizing to watch it form. Little chunks of ice joining the dance, spinning round and round. It’s that beauty Mary wanted to share.

“I innocently put it on my Facebook page and before I knew it, we are at 90,000 views now and friends in the Abba coast saw it, who knew?” explained Mary.

Because of the bitter cold lately, the spinning circle is currently frozen over but when it warms up a bit later this week, who knows what you’ll find.

“I call it the spinning circles of ice, and that’s what everyone else calls it,” said Mary. “We just wanted people to take a peek at it and enjoy it with us. We thought it was unique.”

Greg added, “This is a little berg in Michigan, and everyone come down and enjoy the Cedar River.”
