Ice Wine or Liquid Gold?

A sweet dessert wine is making an appearance at Chateau Chantal’s second annual Ice Wine Festival. This Old Mission winery is hosting an event to celebrate the hard work they have put into harvesting thousands of frozen grapes that took place Monday, January 21st.

Head Winemaker at Chateau Chantal, Brian Hosmer says, “It’s a huge gamble. You leave fruit out on the vine for 3 months and then after that you hope that it comes through and freezes so you get what you need out of the fruit. There’s only a handful of places where you have a good growing season to grow these types of grapes and then you can also get these cold temperatures in the winter just in the perfect spot where it doesn’t go so cold that it kills the vines.”

This event is primarily taking place on Saturday January 26th and offering people not only the opportunity to taste what they call “liquid gold” but also getting to participate in friendly snowmen building competitions, tours and more.

Ice wine is made from grapes that have been frozen on the vines and are picked when temperatures dip below freezing. Chateau Chantal’s Ice Wine is so popular that one of their wines have been served to the Obama family at the White House.
