Ripple Effect from Partial Government Shutdown Hits S.S. Badger, Ludington

The shutdown may be happening in the dead of winter, but it looks like it could now affect the summer tourism season.

Specifically for those crossing Lake Michigan on the S.S. Badger.

A federal grant supporting the work to replace ferry docks in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and in Ludington is not being paid out.

Manitowoc found a way to keep the project going on their side with local dollars.

But Ludington can’t cover the costs.

They’re filing a legal notice that they are unable to move forward right now.

It is time-sensitive, because they’ve already torn out the old badger dock in Ludington.

So if work is stopped for much longer, it could delay the start of the 2019 sailing season.
