Celebration Week in Traverse City Remembers Martin Luther King Jr.

Tuesday, Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 90 years old.

Next Monday is the day we honor him and celebrate his life, it’s called an International Day of Service.

In honor of the auspicious day, Northern Michigan has some opportunities that make it easy for you to give back.

The theme is always make it a day on, not a day off.

Many don’t have to go to work or school. Instead, people are encouraged to volunteer, and give back to their communities.

If that’s what you want to do, the will be launching its annual Celebration Week starting Jan 21 through Jan. 25 in partnership with .

As part of Celebration Week, there will be several volunteer opportunities available. Including…

  • A Community Read Aloud initiative at the Traverse Area District Library and Great Lakes Children’s Museum to promote youth literacy.
  • A Ranch Work Day at the Reigning Liberty Ranch that supports Veterans and Military Families.
  • TCACC’s hygiene drive from Jan. 7 to 21 supports the Spirit Youth Pantry through the Traverse Bay Intermediate School District. Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce and United Way office in Traverse City.
  • Creating Welcome Home Baskets supporting area homeless families; you can create a basket to drop off, create a basket from 9 – 11 a.m. or donate funds to have a basket prepared by volunteers.
