UPDATE: Snowboarders Successfully Hit 16 Ski Hills Across the State in 24 Hours

UPDATE: David Zemens and Sam Caputo completed their goal to hit 16 ski hills across Michigan in 24 hours.

The pair finished at Mount Brighton Saturday night.

Two snowboarders were on a mission.

Their goal was to hit 16 ski hills across Michigan, but they had to do it in just 24 hours.

The previous unofficial record was 12.

With so much opportunity in the state of Michigan, the two snowboarders were confident they could  beat it.

“Right now it’s still fun. I imagine at some point tomorrow around lunch time we’re going to be getting pretty tired. You know fatigued from driving back and forth across the state but so far so good,” said David Zemens, the man behind the idea.

Zemens and Sam Caputo were just getting started on a long journey to snowboard down 16 ski hills throughout Michigan.

“I’m optimistic. I’m optimistic that I’ll still be able to make the drive home from Mount Brighton, but yeah it’s going to be a long day tomorrow. Definitely going to be tired,” said Zemens.

That confidence came in at the beginning and was still going around 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon when we caught up with them at stop number ten, Crystal Mountain.

“Even though the back and forth and in and out of the car and cold and warm and cold and warm but it’s been a good day so far. The roads are clear which is super important you know visibility’s good. No real issues or setbacks, knock on wood,” said Zemens.

Zemens got the idea after reading about a group that did this in Vermont, but they only hit 12 slopes.

“I said we got 37 ski areas in Michigan, right? We got to be able to beat 12,” said Zemens.

They both say it had been a long day, but not exactly what they expected.

“I was nervous that at some point today it start being really miserable and so far it hasn’t,” said Zemens.

Their final goal was to finish at Mount Brighton and to be done by 9 p.m. Saturday night.

41 minutes before the deadline, the duo posted on social media they were successful.

We did it! 16 ski areas in UNDER 24 hours. Thank you to Michigan Snowsports Industries Association and all the resorts from the top of the mitten to SE Michigan that made this possible. Guinness World Records- you’re on notice. We’ll be in touch for next season.

Even if you can’t see much snow out of your window right now, these two encourage everyone to hit the slopes.

“The resorts have snow, they’re open. Come up and ski Michigan,” said Sam Caputo whose been hitting the slopes with Zemens.

But maybe just try one slope at a time.
