Fundraiser Looks to Help Keep ‘The Wex’ Working

Right now The Wex is renting an ice maker but the costs are getting too high, especially with utilities.

“The people out in the community, they love the ice rink,” said Carla Filkins, Cadillac Rotary auction chair.

The Wex is home to the Cadillac High School hockey team and skaters ages 3 to 70.

Now the rink, as well as the attached auditorium, need help.

“The ice arena is 20 years old. The auditorium is twice that age, and there’s maintenance and replacement of certain assets that just wear out over time,” explained Mike Figliomeni, a board member of Boon Sports Management.

The ice maker broke down in the fall, forcing them to rent a costly replacement.

Now they need around $150,000 to buy their own.

“In addition to that, we have pretty expensive projects with the auditorium roof, with heating and air conditioning systems for both the buildings, as well as improvements that have to be made with the parking lot,” said Figliomeni.

Add up all those repairs and The Wex is looking at a need of $500,000.

But they say for now, their priority is to have the funds for the ice by spring.

The Cadillac Rotary Club chose The Wex as its project and will hold an auction to raise money.

“I think it’s the community’s wish that we can get this to be a place where people want to come and hold their events,” said Filkins.
