Made With Love: Michigan Cookie Cutters

Straits Area Services, a day-program in Cheboygan is offering the developmentally disabled or mentally impaired the opportunity to learn valuable life skills and take on a job – a job that makes !

Executive Director of SAS, Amy Carter says, “we try to offer opportunities for the clients who want to work to work. It gives them employability, skills and a safe place to learn these skills. The goal is for them to eventually work outside of here and on their own.”

Martha Schwartz, one of the original clients says, “20 years I’ve been to this workshop… I love it here!”

This program helps clients reach their highest level of independence by letting them take on tasks that give them a finished product to be by buying one of these cookie cutters is giving this hard-working individuals a paycheck that they are particularly proud of. When I asked Martha what her favorite park of being in the workshop was, she responded with, “working – making the big bucks!”

Making “big bucks” and making an even bigger difference across the state.

Executive Director Amy Carter says, “You can’t get the sincerity or the love you get from this group elsewhere – you just can’t.”
