Starting Jan. 1 musky and walleye fishing tournaments must register with the Michigan DNR.
In 2016, bass fishing tournaments had to start registering with the DNR.
In the two years since, the DNR was able to compile valuable data on the fisheries along with where tournaments were being held.
Before that there was no data at all coming to the DNR regarding these tournaments.
The DNR is excited to build on the success.
“That data is really important to us fisheries biologist as we try to determine how best to manage these lakes. And it helps us determine where our best bass fisheries are located, and the new regulations will help us determine where our best musky and walleye fisheries are,” explained Mark Tonello with the DNR.
