Governor Rick Snyder came in as a political outsider, a self made millionaire who wanted to serve his home state.

Now as his reign wraps up in the next few weeks, he is looking back on his 8 years at the helm and noting what he accomplished and what he could have done better.

“I went through some really tough times and so did the people of Flint and a couple other instances where you wish you could’ve done things better or different,” says Snyder.

He didn’t expect it to be easy, but to be fair, as a new politician he didn’t know what to expect. In his eight years, Governor Snyder saw the highs and the lows, some applaud him for his economic success while others claim he saw people as just assets in the business.

“I never ran it like a business because the motive is not profit,” says Snyder, “The motive is to help people.”

The criticisms continue to his final month, as members of his party push hard during the lame duck sessions. The governor is pushing back saying even in his final weeks, he remains level headed.

“People should not expect that I’m just going to sign things,” Snyder says, “Or I’m just going to veto things. I take each piece of legislation seriously.”

As with most politicians, it’s going to take some time to see the true impact of Snyder’s governorship but he’s not too worried about that. H says he doesn’t do this about his legacy, he’s always been worried about improving his home state for Michiganders and himself now that he leaves office.

“I never viewed this about me,” says Snyder, “This was about what’s best for the people of Michigan.”

Snyder says he didn’t plan his whole life to hold the state’s top office and a future in politics doesn’t seem likely/ He feels he did what he set out to do and it is time for the next step in the life of a governor.

“In the end I’ll miss the ability to help 10 million people and I hope to be a Michigan citizen who can go give back by teaching, mentoring, doing a portfolio of things,” says Snyder, “After Sue kicks me out.”
